Background:
Marie was born in a foreign country and moved to Faru at the age of 20 to start new life after being disowned by her parents; the mother being an alcoholic and the father neither standing up for himself nor the children.
When Marie was 12 her sister was imprisoned for selling "shrooms" > Marie, being young and, well, quite stupid, did not know the term "shrooms" stood for anything other than mushrooms. Thus, in honor of her sister who was, in her eyes, imprisoned for something completely innocent, she started consciously developing an addiction to literal mushrooms.
Her sister died a few years later in a prison riot, but Marie's parents kept it a secret from her until she was 20, in order to manipulate her - whenever she asked, they told her that her sister's sentence had been extended and until she got out of prison Marie had to stay living with them to await her arrival. At some point Marie's father couldn't bear keeping the secret anymore and told her, after wich she had a fight with her mother, who promptly disowned her.
