Background:
A daughter of Khenozhuryvka, Volha Pollak grew up in a rather poor family. During her childhood, she would often look up at the stars and wonder what could be out there in space. Pollak would often try to talk with other people from the village to get any information about it as her family didn't own any books about the subject nor did they own any equipment with which to observe space.
Pollak's parents noted their only child's increasing fascination with space and would start saving for a telescope. One day however, before her family could afford it, Pollak's father tragically passed away after becoming seriously ill. Pollak's mother was unable to gather the money needed for one and the family would start having problems getting enough money for food.
One day Pollak would meet a comparatively well off kid from a conservative family named Alexey when she was trying to assemble her own telescope out of pieces of metal and glass and would end up befriending him. Alexey wasn't as interested in space but would get along with Pollak. It wouldn't stop Pollak however from talking to Alexey about stuff she heard from others about space. Pollak would sometimes do work for Alexey's family so her mother would have enough money to live.
